Shinran Shonin (1173-1262)
'To reveal the true teaching: It is the Larger Sutra of the Buddha of Immeasurable Life. The central purport of this sutra is that Amida, by establishing the incomparable Vows, has opened wide the dharma-storehouse, and full of compassion for small, foolish beings, selects and bestows the treasure of virtues.' - Shinran, The Collected Works of Shinran, p. 7
Shinran founded The True Pure Land School of Buddhism (Jodo Shinshu or Shin Buddhism) in 1224 A.D.
In his teaching and writing, Shinran explains and interprets the Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life in the light of many other teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, and the commentaries of the Dharma Masters of India, China and Japan.
